Former Newcastle striker Faustino Asprilla has revealed he would like to return to the club in a coaching capacity.

Asprilla, 42, was a fans' favourite during a two-year spell at St James' Park during the 1990s. The former Colombia international was part of Kevin Keegan's side which finished second in the Premier League.

In an interview with the Sun, Asprilla says that he has remained in contact with Newcastle and first spoke to them about his interest in coming back a year ago. Although nothing official has been put in place he remains hopeful of something being worked out that would see him become involved with the current team.

"A year ago I spoke with Newcastle's owners about bringing over players from my coaching school [in Colombia]," Asprilla said. "It didn't happen due to some requirements of the English league but then, during informal meetings with fans, I said I'd be interested in returning.

"That encouraged the owners and three months ago they invited me over. I'm motivated and like the city. I often accompany the team when they are travelling in England. It is a significant opportunity and hopefully something will materialise."
