In-form Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is the best player in the Premier League, his club colleague Jamie Carragher has claimed.

Carragher, who set up Suarez's eighth league goal of the season as the Reds came from behind to draw at Chelsea on Sunday, hailed the Uruguayan as one of the finest players in world football.

The contribution of Suarez has been crucial to Liverpool, who despite his goals have won only two of their 11 league games so far and currently sit in lower mid-table.

And Carragher told the Liverpool Echo: "I've said for 12 months now that he's the best player in the Premier League.

"That is because he's maybe not playing alongside the kind of players that, for example, the Chelsea players can play alongside.

"He's one of the best players in world football and we are delighted to have him. He does things in a game that we see him doing in training on a daily basis."

Carragher said he felt those who questioned Suarez's strike rate were being "unfair", explaining: "He's the joint top scorer in the league [with Robin van Persie] at the moment - and that's in a team that hasn't won that many league games this season, don't forget.

"People say that we are dependent on Suarez, but look at Lionel Messi at Barcelona, Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid. Every team will have a standout player, and Luis is one of them - not just in the Premier League but in the world."
