Hearts have had the immediate threat of closure lifted after HM Revenue and Customs granted them more time to pay their outstanding tax bill.

The Edinburgh club have been set a new deadline of December 3 to settle debts of £449,692,04 over two payments.

The club have also provided HMRC with assurances that future payments would be made in a "timeous manner".

Director Sergejus Fedotovas said: "Make no mistake, the fans and players have been instrumental in achieving this extension with HMRC.

"The supporters' efforts have been quite phenomenal. However, it is essential that they continue all their work to assist us in meeting financial targets at the club.

"It is imperative that they continue with this level of backing in the weeks ahead until the Share Issue closes on December 19."

Hearts were last Wednesday served with a winding-up petition and given eight days in which to pay what they owed, putting their future in severe danger.
