Brazil have defeated Argentina in a penalty shootout to claim the Superclasico de Las Americas on Wednesday.

Mano Menezes' side carried a 2-1 advantage into the second leg and they looked happy to protect their lead with a dour first half providing few attacking chances.

The match looked headed for a 0-0 draw until Argentina found a breakthrough in the 82nd minute when Juan Martinez was fouled on the edge of the penalty area.

Claims from Brazil that Martinez was brought down outside the box were denied as Ignacio Scocco calmly converted from the spot to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

That sparked Brazil into action and they restored their aggregate lead when Fred cleaned up the scraps at the back post to make things 1-1.

But the frantic final minutes provided yet more action with Argentina making a quick break that found its way to Scocco who sealed his brace to send the match into penalties.

Argentina missed their first two chances, giving Brazil a 2-0 lead in the shootout. The home side then clawed their way back to 2-2 after Brazil missed their third attempt, but Santos star Neymar sealed the win with the last kick of the game.
