Moyes targets new goalkeeper

Everton manager David Moyes has admitted he is looking for a new goalkeeper because of concerns that a lack of competition is hindering Tim Howard.

The USA international was partly responsible, according to Moyes, for Sebastien Bassong's 90th-minute equaliser as Norwich gained a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Howard has made 196 consecutive league starts for Everton, and is closing in on Neville Southall's club record of 212, set between 1987 and 1993, but Moyes is looking for someone who can push the 33-year-old harder for his place. Howard's deputy, Jan Mucha, is out of contract at the end of the season, and the manager is considering several options to bring in a keeper.

Moyes looked at Birmingham's Jack Butland during the summer as well as Artur Boruc, who eventually joined Southampton in September after being released by Fiorentina.

"We need competition in all areas and that extends to Tim Howard in goal, absolutely," Moyes told the Guardian.

"Everybody has got to make sure they are at the top of their game. We have got to make sure we are not continually giving away things, making mistakes that are leading to goals that cost us.

"We need competition and there hasn't been enough of that in the last few weeks when we've had a few injuries. It is something we have to think about in January."
