Redknapp has made no approach for Joe Cole - yet

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has admitted that Joe Cole is a player he is interested in signing, but the club have yet to contact Liverpool about the midfielder.

Cole is currently on the fringes of the team at Anfield, with new manager Brendan Rodgers tending to restrict the former England international's appearances to the Europa League and the Capital One Cup.

The former Lille loanee is widely expected to be available in the January transfer window, with Redknapp - who helped develop Cole's talent at West Ham - a known admirer. But the new boss at Loftus Road is yet to talk to Rodgers about the player.

"I signed Joe as an 11-year-old. I know him better than anyone," Redknapp said on Friday. "He's been a top player and I still think there's a top player in him.

"I like him very much as a player but there's been no inquiry from Liverpool at the moment."

Redknapp confirmed that he tried to sign Cole for Tottenham when he left Chelsea on a free transfer in 2010, before the playmaker opted for Merseyside instead. He admitted his amazement that the move had not really worked out for either party.

"I'm surprised it hasn't worked out for Joe Cole at Liverpool," he added. "I tried to take him to Tottenham and he went to Liverpool in the end.

"I've had no contact with Joe or Brendan [Rodgers] or Joe's agent or anybody. I haven't even looked at targets."
