Tim Krul says Newcastle will be targeting success in the Europa League as well as climbing back up the Premier League table.

Goalkeeper Krul kept a clean sheet on Monday as Newcastle beat Wigan 3-0 to end a poor run of form that had seen the club suffer four defeats in a row - a run he said was "unacceptable" for the club.

"I think everybody was just more shocked than anything, but fair play to the lads - we stuck together and spoke about it," he said. "We knew we had to work hard, and that's what we did."

The Magpies travel to Bordeaux for their final Europa League group game on Thursday, having already secured qualification, and can cement top spot in their group with a win.

"We've already achieved one thing, the Europa League. We wanted to stay in that, we're in the last 32 and it's a great competition to be in," Krul said.

"Is it important to get the top spot? Yes and no. I think I've heard Jose Mourinho say every time he's won the Champions League he's finished second in the group.

"Great teams are dropping down from the Champions League, but I've also seen a lot of good teams in the Europa League already."

He said Newcastle could push up the Premier League table after the win over Wigan, adding: "We want top 10. The league is quite tight this year, and a few wins puts you right back up there."
