Zenit St Petersburg want to make Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini the latest addition to their expensively assembled squad in the January transfer window.

Fellaini, 25, has been one of the Premier League's star performers in the early part of the season, scoring eight goals in Everton's opening 15 games.

Despite being contracted to David Moyes' side until 2016 he has been linked with Chelsea and Manchester City but Russian side Zenit have now registered their interest in tempting him away from England.

A Zenit source told L!feSports: "The management expect to strengthen midfield. The signings will be of high quality. Belgium international Marouane Fellaini is on the list. He has clearly proved himself for Everton."

Fellaini hasn't been shy to talk up a move away from Goodison Park in the past. Last summer he claimed this could be his last season at Everton alerting clubs to his potential availability.

He told Het Nieuwsblad: "I am just starting my fifth season at Everton, this will be one of my last. I have seen everything. In January or at the end of the season I will turn to another club or championship."

Everton say they have had no contract from Zenit for Fellaini, and manager David Moyes has made it clear to his board that he does not want to sell the player.

However, Moyes did indicate in November that he would struggle to resist a huge offer for a player signed from Standard Liege for £15 million in 2008, and who is under contract until 2016.

"Everybody knows where he is, if clubs want to come and watch him they can, but there will be a big price on his head," Moyes told the Guardian after the 2-1 Premier League win over Sunderland on November 10.
