Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy could be set to miss the rest of the Premier League season because of injury.

McCarthy, 23, hurt his shoulder during the closing stages of the 1-1 draw with QPR at Loftus Road on November 4, and has not made an appearance since.

Last week, he tweeted that his season was over, but the post was quickly removed from his account.

He wrote: "On route back home from London, was expecting the outcome with the specialist. Surgery on Monday, my season over! #Raging."

With McCarthy having undergone surgery, Reading manager Brian McDermott has refused to set a deadline for the former England Under-21 international to return but confirmed that it would be a long layoff.

"We don't want to put a time frame on it except to say it will be a long time. A decent amount of time,'' McDermott said.

McCarthy had staked a claim for the No. 1 position with the newly-promoted side and edged out the established Adam Federici thanks to a number of impressive displays.
