League Two Bradford City have been expelled from the FA Cup after fielding an illegible player in their second round match against Brentford last Friday.

The FA said the Yorkshire club had been kicked out because they had played Curtis Good, on loan from Newcastle, without receiving written permission by the 12pm deadline on the Friday of the tie.

They drew 1-1 with League One high-fliers Brentford at Valley Parade, but the Bees will go into the third round where they will face either Bury or Southend, subject to the outcome of an appeal, which Bradford confirmed they had lodged on Friday.

An FA statement read: "The FA has confirmed that Bradford City have been removed from the FA Cup with Budweiser 2012-13 competition after fielding an ineligible player in their second round tie against Brentford.

"Bradford's removal from the competition is subject to appeal, but if this appeal is unsuccessful, Brentford will go forward to the third round."

Bradford said an error of "an administrative technical nature" had been made and issued an apology to their supporters.

"The nature of the [FA] charge is the playing of one of our loan players, deemed ineligible due to the late submission for permission for him to play," a club statement said.

"Bradford City Football Club is very sorry to have to report such a matter, and apologises to our fans. The error was of an administrative technical nature, and not one to intentionally break competition rules.

"We presented a case of mitigation to the FA. However, the FA panel chose to enforce the full powers of its jurisdiction and have removed the club from the FA Cup competition."

The statement said Bradford "have until 5pm [on Friday] to lodge an appeal with the FA, and we are currently reviewing our position in relation to this".
