Simpson hopes to add to Man City suffering

Newcastle United defender Danny Simpson is hopeful that the Magpies can cause further damage to Manchester City's title bid when the champions visit St James' Park on Saturday.

City are this weekend looking to bounce back from their dramatic 3-2 loss to Manchester United but, while Newcastle have so far struggled to replicate their form of last season, Simpson feels an upset may be on the cards.

"We have only beaten Tottenham at home and we are due to upset one of the big teams, so let's do it against Man City," Simpson said in the Evening Chronicle. "We believe in ourselves, in the manager, staff and fans. We just have to keep doing what we are doing and we will pick up points.

"City must come to our patch. They will be disappointed (after the derby defeat) but at the same time they will want to bounce back. We have nothing to lose, so we just need to give them a tough game. City have not lost two Premier League games in a row since October 2010 and have now slipped six points behind their bitter rivals Man United at the top of the table.

"I don't think City lose two on the bounce very often. They lost against Man United the other day. They are a good team for us to play. Some teams will think they are going to get beat against them, but we'll give it a go and the fans will be behind us."

He went onto add: "It is a while since we beat City. Hopefully it is our time. If we keep putting effort in we could upset City. It's the first time since the manager has been here that it has been a tough period. Every team goes through it. We are showing the right things on the pitch that we can turn things round. It is just little things we need to iron out."

Although Newcastle are hovering dangerously above the relegation zone, Simpson said the dip in form does not concern him.

"If you start worrying now you won't be able to perform," he said. "The way that we are performing and the effort we put in shows that it is just bad luck. We have the players - it's not like we are going out and getting beat. We actually are doing all right and have been unlucky. We are coming off the pitch feeling unlucky rather than angry we didn't perform. Take away the Southampton game, since then I think we've been doing well it just hasn't fell for us."
