Weimann aiming to impress at Villa
Aston Villa's Andreas Weimann is hoping for a "breakthrough season" at Villa Park.
In recent weeks, Weimann has emerged as a genuine contender to be Christian Benteke's long-term strike partner. The form of Austria international Weimann, who scored twice in the Capital One Cup quarter-final win over Norwich City and followed that up with another goal in the 3-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield, has been impressive.
He has been forced to wait for his chance to break into the Villa first team picture and intends to make the most of his opportunity.
"I hope it can be a breakthrough season for me," Weimann said. "I have played a lot of football lately, and that's the first time I've really been doing that regularly with the first team.
"Hopefully I can keep doing that and get a few more games. Whenever I play I try to do my best, and hopefully I'll get a chance to play if I keep scoring.
"It has been great to play in two big games this week and score, but the most important thing is the team winning.
"There is competition for places, but hopefully I can show the manager what I can do. For myself, three goals in two games is great. To score in a big cup game was nice and also to get one at Anfield was special."
The Austrian has struck up a partnership with Benteke and is keen to work on that relationship, adding: "It is great to play with someone like Christian. He wins the ball and holds it up and is scoring goals as well. In the last few weeks, he has been outstanding.
"I hope we can continue to forge a partnership. I want to stay in the team, and I feel we've worked well in the past few games."
