The prospect of Arsenal or Liverpool signing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in January have been dashed as the striker has signed a new deal at Schalke.

The Netherlands international had been strongly linked with Arsenal, while Liverpool were also said to have an interest, but a little over a week before the transfer window opens he has put his name to a deal that ties him to Schalke until 2015.

"I've been thinking long and carefully about this decision," he told the club's official website. "I feel good here and this is a positive sign that I believe in what we are doing here and I feel we can achieve a lot in the second half of the season."

Sports Director Horst Heldt said: "Together with Klaas-Jan, we had originally targeted, only to enter the decisive phase of the talks next month. So I am very pleased that Klaas-Jan now sets a clear signal to the entire club for the second half of the season."

Huntelaar joined Schalke from Milan in 2010, having also had spells with Real Madrid and Ajax.
