Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he had been unaware of Michu prior to his summer move to Swansea City.

Michu, 26, proved prolific in La Liga last season with Rayo Vallecano and has been a revelation in the Premier League since making a £2 million move to Swansea, with Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque even talking of a potential call-up to the national team.

Ferguson, though, has admitted he had little knowledge of the player and feels his side may have missed out.

"Michael Laudrup is cherry-picking and the boy Michu was a first-class piece of business," he said on the club's official website. "Just £2 million and I'd never really heard of him. I should have a word with my scouting department!"

United take on Swansea on Sunday looking to restore their six-point advantage over second-placed Manchester City, but Ferguson knows Michu is capable of causing problems.

In quotes reported by the Sunday Mirror, he added: "The fact that Michu has had such an impact so early at least gives us the chance to assess him. He can play up front, of course, but he can also drop into midfield so that they can bring in Danny Graham.

"Not knowing where Michu will play gives us a problem. We have to be aware of his threat."

Swansea have enjoyed an impressive start under Laudrup, currently sitting in mid-table despite having to contend with a change of manager and the loss of key players Joe Allen and Scott Sinclair in the summer.

Ferguson has been impressed by Laudrup's work and expressed his disbelief that a number of players had questioned the Dane's methods in a meeting with chairman Huw Jenkins.

"I'm surprised by that - and I'd be surprised if the chairman would have listened to them," he said. "I'm sure he didn't. Players can be unhappy, but it's not a professional thing to go to speak to the chairman about it. If they're not happy then why not speak to Laudrup?"
