Ryan Stevenson scored twice as Hearts climbed to sixth in the Scottish Premier League with 2-1 victory over Dundee United.

In a match where Rudi Skacel was supposed to be the central protagonist on his Tynecastle return, Stevenson put Hearts in front after 15 minutes and added a second from the penalty spot after 31 minutes.

Keith Watson pulled a goal back after 57 minutes but United could not find a second as Hearts climbed above their opponents with victory in their final home match of a tumultuous calendar year.

Kilmarnock and Hibernian served up some decent festive fare before sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw at a sodden Rugby Park.

In an entertaining first-half played in almost constant rain, striker Paul Heffernan gave the Ayrshire side the lead in the sixth minute before Hibees hit-man Eoin Doyle levelled in 26 minutes with his third goal in two games.

While Killie defender Robbie Fowler made a goalline clearance from Paul Cairney just after the break, excitement levels dipped and thereafter neither side did enough to claim all three points.
