Brendan Rodgers has revealed Liverpool are working on a new contract for Steven Gerrard.

England captain Gerrard has 16 months remaining on his present commitment, but Rodgers wants to put together a package that ensures the midfielder spends his entire career at Liverpool.

"He is vital to us, and I recognise that. I know he has 16 months left on his contract, but I would want him to go beyond that for this club and this team," Rodgers is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.

Liverpool are beginning to look towards youth, which has raised question marks about Gerrard's position, but Rodgers feels his 32-year-old captain is vital to the club's development.

Rodgers said: "He has been an inspirational captain for us, he has been a huge figure in the development of this team. We are improving, we are growing, and he has influenced that.

"Absolutely I would want him to stay beyond his current contract and extend it - there is absolutely no question about that."
