Tottenham have moved to dispel uncertainty surrounding Brad Friedel's future by handing the veteran goalkeeper a contract extension.

The 41-year-old, who has fallen behind Hugo Lloris in the pecking order, had been linked with a return to former club Blackburn in the January transfer window.

However, the USA international, who joined Spurs from Aston Villa in 2010, has signed a new deal to keep him at White Hart Lane until 2014.

A statement on Tottenham's official website confirmed: "We are delighted to announce that Brad Friedel has signed a new contract with the club until 2014."

Friedel, who holds the Premier League record for 310 consecutive starts, tweeted on Sunday: "I know there has been quite a bit of speculation regarding my future. All will be revealed in next couple of days:). Happy Holidays!!!"

The oldest player to have ever competed in the Premier League is former Manchester City and Newcastle goalkeeper John Burridge, who turned out for City in 1995 at the age of 43 years and 162 days.

Friedel's 43rd birthday comes on May 18, 2014 - meaning he would fall just short of Burridge's record unless he is handed another new deal.
