Brailsford: Giro is Wiggins' priority
Dave Brailsford has issued Bradley Wiggins with his mission statement for 2013: win the Giro d'Italia and do your best at the Tour de France.
Wiggins became the first British cyclist ever to wear the yellow jersey on the winners' podium in Paris this July and Brailsford wants the Olympic time-trial gold medallist to add the Tour of Italy's pink jersey to his wardrobe.
The Team Sky principal believes a shift in focus will keep Wiggins mentally fresh, adding that he can still ride the Tour which starts on June 29.
But with the Giro finishing on May 26, the 32-year-old will only have one month to recover between the two three-week races.
"In the performance world it's good to mix things up and to take a different approach to things and different challenges so I think the Tour of Italy is well suited to Bradley," Brailsford told Sky Sports News.
"It's a challenging race and one of the three grand tours and for me it would make a lot of sense for Brad to try and target that, to see if he could win the great Tour of Italy.
"Then ride the Tour [de France] in the condition he comes out of the Tour of Italy in, obviously we have got Chris who can focus entirely on the Tour."
