Hannover president Martin Kind has revealed that negotiations have begun to sign Arsenal defender Johan Djourou in the January transfer window.

The Bundesliga club conceded 31 goals in an exhausting first half of the season and are looking to add more depth to their squad as they attempt to secure a return to Europe for the third year in a row.

"I can confirm the name [of Djourou]," Kind told Bild. "He is on our list. There have been talks."

It is reported that the Switzerland international could join Hannover on a loan deal until the summer, with a view to a permanent move should the spell be successful.

Djourou has fallen out of favour at Arsenal and has not appeared for the first team since a shambolic defensive display in the 7-5 Capital One Cup victory over Reading in October.

Hannover, meanwhile, are also working on bringing in Hamburg midfielder Gojko Kacar, who recently welcomed a prospective move when saying: "Hannover is a great club. I'd be happy to play Europa League."

Hannover chief Kind claimed there is a chance both players will arrive in "the next two days", with the squad set to head out to Portugal for their mid-season training camp.
