Tottenham have beaten Arsenal to the signature of Lewis Holtby, with the Germany international agreeing a deal to move from Schalke in the summer.

Holtby, who has an English father, has made a huge impression for Schalke, leading to talk of a move to England when his contract expires in the summer.

Arsenal and Tottenham had been heavily linked in recent weeks and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger confirmed his interest on Thursday.

However, Arsenal have been beaten to the punch by Tottenham who have struck a deal to bring the midfielder to the Premier League in the summer.

A statement on Spurs' official website read: "We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Germany Under-21 captain Lewis Holtby to join the club in July from Bundesliga side Schalke, subject to a medical."
