Taylor in line for punishment over Barney

Phil Taylor looks set to have 'the book thrown at him' for his on-stage confrontation with Raymond van Barneveld at the World Darts Championship.

Taylor took annoyance at Van Barneveld's handshake and exchanged words with the Dutchman after their semi-final at Alexandra Palace, which The Power won 6-4.

Afterwards Taylor, 52, apologised and expressed his disappointment at his actions, adding he would be happy to feel the full force of any disciplinary action.

Taylor went on to win his 16th world title by beating Van Barneveld's compatriot Michael van Gerwen in the final. But following his success, the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) indicated that Taylor's misdemeanors could catch up with him.

"As with any incident like this, it has been referred to the Darts Regulation Authority," a PDC spokesman said. "They will decide if there's been any breach of the rules and whether there should be a punishment."

Taylor's original apology to Van Barneveld highlighted the pair's friendship away from the oche.

"I reacted disgracefully and I feel terrible," Taylor told Sky Sports.

"I'm ashamed because I really like Raymond but he hurt me a little bit, that was all it was. It was spur of the moment and the PDC can throw the book at me."
