Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed the club are close to signing Senegal defender Abdou Mangane.

Mangane, 29, is currently playing with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, with reports in the Middle East claiming he was set to sign a loan agreement with the club this weekend.

And a loan move is now close to completion, according to O'Neill.

"I'm hoping that he's making his way over at this minute," the Sunderland boss said. "I'm not sure that anything has been absolutely and utterly completed, but it would be a loan until the end of the season.

"Of course, we have a number of positions we would like to try to fill between now and the end of January, and I'm hoping something might materialise. But there's a long bit of distance to go yet."

Should Mangane complete his deal, he will be the club's second January signing following the arrival of French midfielder Alfred N'Diaye from Bursaspor earlier this week.

N'Diaye, 22, began his career in Ligue 1 with Nancy before moving to Turkey in 2011. Joining for an undisclosed fee the France Under-21 international signed a three-and-a-half-year-deal with the Wearsiders.
