Olympique Marseille have confirmed they have agreed the sale of Loic Remy to Newcastle United.

It is understood Newcastle's offer is £8.6 million with the striker now set to hold talks and undergo a medical with the Magpies as he seeks to finalise a move to the North East.

Speaking to RMC Sport, president Vincent Labrune said: "We have an agreement with Newcastle for the transfer of Remy. Loic can negotiate with them."

Remy, 26, has been a long-term target for Newcastle, with the club facing competition from a number of clubs including Premier League rivals Queens Park Rangers.

Prior to the confirmation Remy received well wishes from former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton, who has spent the season alongside the striker while on loan at Marseille.

Barton tweeted: "Good luck to Loic in Newcastle. Don't worry I've told him what to expect. Great guy. Perfect club for him. #toonarmy."

Manager Alan Pardew has been keen to add reinforcements to his squad following a spate of winter injuries and the sale of Demba Ba to Chelsea early in the January transfer window.

Speaking after his side's goalless draw with Norwich on Saturday, he revealed that the club are in negotiations to secure several players.

"We are pursuing three or four players and they all seem to be warming up a bit," he said. "We need a bigger pool of players."
