Wigan have been hit by the blow that defender Ivan Ramis is to be ruled out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

Scans revealed on Monday that Ramis, 28, who was stretchered off in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Fulham, ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Although it is a huge setback for the club it is believed the injury could have been far worse. The former Mallorca man will undergo surgery as soon as possible and should be ready to make a comeback for the start of next season.

"Nothing can disguise the fact this is a massive blow because Ivan is a key member of the group but we are relieved that the injury is not as severe as we feared it could have been," manager Roberto Martinez told the club's official website.

"The most important thing now is to think of Ivan's welfare, get the operation completed, and for him to begin his rehabilitation. Ivan is a very strong and positive character and he is determined to return to fitness as soon as he can.

"He will receive the best possible medical rehabilitation as the club ensures to have him return as an even stronger footballer."

The injury almost certainly means that Martinez will now look to bring in a new defender this month, with the Latics boss claiming on Monday that an extra addition to the squad would depend on the results of Ramis' scan.
