Benitez's next job application
It is probably fair to say that Rafael Benitez's time at Chelsea is not exactly going according to plan. However, a silver lining awaits the Spaniard, who recently came out on top of a poll asking who will be Real Madrid's next manager.
We know Rafa's got a sense of humour, so we decided to draw up an imaginary job application for the Bernabeu position...
Training and coaching my team. Always I am focused on training and coaching my team. My plan is training and coaching my team.
Now we think about the next game.
Fernando Torres and John Obi Mikel.
Two Liga titles, a European Cup, an FA Cup, 18 shots at goal against Southampton and 64% possession at home to QPR.
But we must only think of the next game.
Very strong. In 2010, I was asked by the media what went wrong at Liverpool, so I explained, "White liquid in a bottle has to be milk". Everybody jokingly reacted like they didn't know what I meant.
What attracts you to this role?
Alvaro Arbeloa. Also, Xabi Alonso can be used as a make-weight in a deal for Gareth Barry, but mostly Arbeloa.
And I hear Pepe is playing centre-back but clearly he is a goalkeeper.
Give an example of a problem you have solved
At 3-0 down at half-time in the Champions League final against AC Milan, I briefly named 12 players to take to the field for the second half. In the end I only played 11 and we won. Playing Harry Kewell between the lines was key.
Describe a situation where you implemented change
When I took over at Liverpool they were in the Champions League but when I left they were not. This was no fluke... when I took charge of Chelsea they were in a title race but after my arrival they are not.
Describe a difficult team project you have worked on
John Terry's public relations campaign.
But for now always my focus must be on the next game.
I need a table. I asked one of my previous employers, back when I lived in Valencia, for a table and they brought me a lampshade. I need a table.
