Wigan Athletic midfielder Shaun Maloney has signed a new two-and-a-half year contract with the club.

Maloney, 29, who joined Wigan from Celtic for £850,000 in August 2011, has been rewarded for the form that has seen him make 20 Premier League starts this season and for his role in the club's top flight survival in the last campaign.

Latics manager Roberto Martinez said he was pleased to have secured the future of Maloney - who made his return to the international scene for Scotland last year - until 2015.

"We're delighted that Shaun has committed his future to the club," he told the club's official website. "From the first day he arrived, his professionalism and determination to succeed has been outstanding and an example for the younger members of the group to follow.

"Shaun is one of the most technically-gifted British players that you will find but, on top of his style and footballing flair, his work-rate and purpose in his performances make him a key member of our future at Wigan Athletic.

"I'm sure the fans are looking forward to watching him continue to enjoy his football at Latics for a long time."
