Pardew reveals Cabaye injury setback

Alan Pardew saw his Newcastle side slip to a 2-1 defeat to Reading and he has revealed Yohan Cabaye suffered an injury setback.

Newcastle led through a superb Cabaye free-kick, but the France international was withdrawn during the second half. The substitution was greeted with a chorus of boos, but Pardew has revealed it was enforced on account of a groin problem.

"We had to take Cabaye off because of an injury, that brought negative reaction from the crowd and that spread around," Pardew told Sky Sports of a player who only recently returned from a spell on the sidelines. "We need some impetus. We have lost Demba Ba and Cheik. We have got Cabaye back, but he is just on the first stage of his comeback. We needed him towards the end of the game.

"He said he was struggling with his groin. I did not want to take him off, but when a top player tells you he's injured you listen to him."

Pardew's side are two points above the relegation zone and the Magpies manager is concerned and feels arrivals in the final week of the window can aid his cause.

"It was a painful day for Newcastle," he said. "First half we could not have played better, you could see the extra quality. At that point you'd like t think we'd get away from them, but second half we could not get a grip of the game. We gave away two sloppy goals.

"We need some impetus in terms of singings. It needs a little boost, to get everyone to get their heads up."
