Everton have announced that centre-back Sylvain Distin has signed a new one-year contract extension.

The deal will tie Distin, 35, to the club until the summer of 2014, ending speculation about a potential switch to Sunderland or Queens Park Rangers.

The Frenchman would have been a free agent at the end of the season but has joined Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman in committing his future to the Toffees.

Distin took to Twitter to confirm his new deal, writing: "Contract sorted. Don't have time to enjoy as I need to go back to hard work, ha ha ha."

The former Newcastle and Manchester City centre-back, who has made 19 first-team appearances this season, joined Everton from Portsmouth for £5 million in the summer of 2009.
