Gomez: Wigan can walk cup-league tightrope

Jordi Gomez insists that Wigan can juggle an FA Cup run with a battle for Premier League survival.

The Latics reached the fifth round of the competition for only the second time in their history - the last time coming in 1987 - after winning 1-0 at non-league Macclesfield on Saturday. In the league, however, there is less to smile about, with Wigan languishing in 19th position.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez must now decide whether to make a serious push for Wembley or rest key players in the next round. Gomez, though, believes that the club can handle the demands of both league and cup.

"Of course the league is the priority and we are playing with more young players in the cup but we are still doing a great job," he told the Daily Star. "I think the players who have been playing in the cup are doing a good job.

"We have the energy for a cup run. Yes. We have a lot of players and everyone who is playing is giving their best and there is no problem with that. We know there are cup games and league games and we know how to deal with it."

Wigan have won only one of their last ten league games, but Gomez believes a good cup run could give them the momentum to secure their top-flight status.

"It is always nice to get a good run in the cup and we will try to do that this season and then in the league do the same," he added.
