Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has been charged with common assault over an alleged attack on a woman last year.

Sterling is accused of causing "slight" facial injuries to a 27-year-old woman in Toxteth, Liverpool, on November 2, when the player was 17 years old.

Solicitor Mick Hogan, attending a hearing on Sterling's behalf on Friday, told Liverpool Youth Court that the player denies the allegation.

"I do have instructions to the effect that Mr Sterling will be pleading not guilty to this charge," Mr Hogan said. "He is aware of today's hearing and the club are very supportive."

Mr Hogan also requested that, as Sterling turned 18 in December, the meeting be transferred to the adult courts. The prosecution supported that suggestion, and Chairman of the Bench Brian Upton adjourned the matter to Liverpool Magistrates' Court on February 22.
