Williams the star as Hibs edge Aberdeen

Celtic, Dundee and Hibernian all made it safely through to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup on Sunday, but Aberdeen are out.

Celtic beat Raith Rovers 3-0 with goals coming from Kris Commons, James Forrest and Charlie Mulgrew. Yet the Scottish Premier League champions only made the breakthrough against their First Division opponents thanks to a penalty in the 56th minute.

Commons was fouled by Simon Mensing just inside the box and took the penalty himself, placing it into the bottom left corner just beyond David McGurn's reach.

With seven minutes remaining substitute Forrest went on a run and slotted the ball past McGurn to put the game to bed. The finishing touch came two minutes later when Mulgrew executed a 22-yard curling shot to score.

Dundee enjoyed a welcome escape from their SPL strife by beating Morton 5-1 at Dens Park. As First Division league leaders, Morton are effectively just one league place below Dundee, who lie bottom of the SPL, and they were in touch in this game at half-time with the scores tied at 1-1.

But second half goals from Lewis Toshney, Colin Nish, John Baird and Declan Gallagher, to go with Jim McAlister's opener, handed Dundee a ticket to the next round. Michael Tidser was the scorer of Morton's only goal after Dundee failed to deal with a loose ball in the box.

In the only all-SPL tie of the day between Hibernian and Aberdeen, Gary Deegan won it for Hibs with a 30-yard strike that bounced in off the underside of the crossbar.

The first half was largely a dull midfield battle at Easter Road with neither side's goalkeeper seeing much action. Yet Hibs' Ben Williams would be called upon to preserve his side's lead - taken four minutes into the second half - on several occasions as Aberdeen pressed for an equaliser.

First he acrobatically touched Dons captain Russell Anderson's shot over the bar and he then recovered well to turn away a header from substitute Scott Vernon. But most spectacularly he saved a penalty, to again deny Vernon, late on.

Williams pushed Vernon's low shot onto the post and recollected his block meaning he has saved two penalties in consecutive weeks against Aberdeen.
