Lambert will savour 100th goal, later

Rickie Lambert said he will savour the feat of joining the select group of players to score 100 goals for Southampton if he finds the net against champions Manchester City on Saturday.

Lambert, 30, scored his 99th goal for the club in the 2-2 draw at Wigan, meaning he only needs one more to join Saints greats such as Mick Channon, Matt Le Tissier, Terry Paine, Ron Davies and Martin Chivers.

And Lambert, who is only in his fourth season at St Mary's, has made quick progress towards his century, averaging better than a goal every other game since his £1 million move from Bristol Rovers.

He said: "It would mean a lot. I don't focus on things like this, but when I retire, I'll look back at things like that and feel it's a good achievement. I'm confident it'll come sooner rather than later. I'm not going to be stressing over it. But [against City] I'll be looking to get a point or win the game, rather than get to 100 goals."

Lambert is the top-scoring Englishman in the Premier League with 11 goals but, despite spending much of his career in the lower divisions with Blackpool, Macclesfield, Stockport, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers, manager Mauricio Pochettino said his reputation now precedes him.

The Argentine explained: "Before I came here, I knew of his ability. I don't know how people think of him generally in England, but I know internationally across Europe that he is well thought of. I have been delighted with his attitude and his performances so far. But I am not surprised."
