Chelsea defender David Luiz issued an apology to Brentford's Jake Reeves, after his late challenge in Sunday's FA Cup tie at Stamford Bridge left the teenager concussed and unable to finish the game.

Brentford boss Uwe Rosler revealed Brazilian defender Luiz made his way into the away team dressing room after the tie that finished in a 4-0 win for the Premier League side to seek out young Reeves after the sickening late clash that forced the Bees to finish the game with 10 men.

"The player (Luiz) came into our dressing-room and he apologised to Jake, which is a fantastic gesture," confirmed Rosler. "I have not seen the situation clearly enough to make a statement now, but Jake is fine. He wanted to continue but our medical staff said it was better that he didn't. They said safety first. He will be okay."

Meanwhile, a fresh round of speculation over the immediate future of interim Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez is underway after former Blues manager Avram Grant watched the Brentford cup tie from the comfort of the executive box owned by Stamford Bridge chief Roman Abramovich.

Grant was in charge of the Chelsea side that came within a penalty kick of lifting the Champions League back in 2008, with some suggesting he could return to the post as Abramovich bides his time before appointing his next permanent Blues manager next summer.

Benitez's post-match suggestion that the FA Cup is emerging as his chief priority in the remaining months of this season was hardly boosted by a draw that set the competition's current holders on course for a possible quarter-final meeting with runaway Premier League leaders Manchester United at Old Trafford.
