Ross County go fifth, Caley hit three

Ross County moved into the top five of the Scottish Premier League with victory over Motherwell while Hearts' defending let them down in a close game with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in Edinburgh.

Defender Gary Warren twice emerged from the attacking pack of players to head Inverness Caledonian Thistle into the lead against Hearts with his second goal proving the winner in a 3-2 victory.

Hearts battled back twice in the match with goals from Jason Holt and Andy Webster. Billy McKay's 18th league goal of the season came in between Warren's efforts and with all three of the visitors' goals coming from set pieces, Hearts manager John McGlynn will know what to work on in training next week.

Ross County beat Motherwell 3-0 in a stirring home display which dropped the visitors down to third. Winger Ivan Sproule continued his excellent form in front of goal to score the opening goal by nutmegging defender Zaine Francis-Angol and then goalkeeper Darren Randolph.

Sproule picked out his captain Richard Brittain for the second goal while Iain Vigurs added the finishing touch with a volley from close range.

Aberdeen were off the mark quickly in their trip to Kilmarnock with Rory Fallon on the scoresheet after eight minutes but could only secure a 1-1 draw. Dons skipper Russell Anderson knocked the ball forward and the New Zealander volleyed it into the far corner of the goal after it sat up nicely.

That set the tone for a period of dominance for the home side but before the first half was up they were back to square one when Paul Heffernan equalised, set up by a short pass from William Gros. Killie goalkeeper Cammy Bell risked giving away a penalty when he took down Niall McGinn, but he went unpunished.

St Johnstone had the rub of the battle field in their encounter with St Mirren to earn a 1-0 win thanks to Rowan Vine sneaking the ball home from Mehdi Abeid's corner. It was no spectacle in Perth but the hosts hit the woodwork three times without scoring and anything other than a win would have been unjust.

Rangers were handed a rare test in the Third Division by the side who bear half their name; Berwick Rangers, but came through it to win 3-1.

The Ibrox-outfit scored all the goals in the game as Anestis Argyriou gave Berwick the lead early on by turning the ball into his own net.

Dean Shiels equalised from the penalty spot before goals from Andy Little and Sebastien Faure, his first of the season, earned the win.
