'You can count on me for the World Cup' - Rooney

After collecting the PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday night, Wayne Rooney declared his groin injury is not cause for concern ahead of the World Cup finals and that he is hoping to return for Manchester United before the end of the season.

Rooney was recognised for a remarkable season in which he has scored 40 goals for club and country when beating Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas and Carlos Tevez to the prestigious prize, while England team-mate James Milner was named Young Player of the Year ahead of the striker.

And despite Rooney missing Saturday's 3-1 win over Tottenham due to injury, it appears this most productive of seasons will end with a trip to South Africa as England's attacking talisman.

Rooney, who recently suffered an ankle injury to leave the English nation waiting on another medical bulletin, believes he may well play for Manchester United when their Premier League campaign comes to a close against Stoke City on May 9.

"The groin will be fine for the World Cup, there are no worries about that," Rooney said. "I'm hoping to play for United in the last game of the season."

Fabio Capello will name his squad for the World Cup finals on June 1, following preparatory friendlies against Mexico and Japan.
