Michael Carrick savoured being compared with Paul Scholes after Manchester United supporters likened the two midfielders in song on Saturday.

During the second half of United's 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers, United fans chorused 'It's Carrick, you know, it's hard to believe it's not Scholes' to the tune of 'It's Magic' by Pilot.

And Carrick said: "Scholesy is a legend, so I don't know whether it is tongue-in-cheek but it is a nice song and I will take that."

It was a sign of the growing appreciation for Carrick, who has not always been a crowd favourite but has been praised for his fine form this season. Scholes, a team-mate of his for the past seven seasons, is one of only three players to make 700 appearances for United and the younger midfielder said he remains an admirer of the 38-year-old.

Carrick added: "It is always good to be compared to players like that. Paul is as good as it gets and has been throughout his career. To train alongside him and have the chance to learn every day has been something I have tried to make the most of. It has helped me bring my own game on whether he knows it or not and that has been a big help."
