Paris Saint-Germain are ready to test Manchester United's resolve with a big-money offer for Wayne Rooney this summer, according to a report in The Times.

Rooney, 27, has been a key figure for United since he moved to the club from Everton nine years ago but his importance to the team has been lessened somewhat by the arrival of Robin van Persie this season.

The prolific Dutchman has netted 23 goals in all competitions for United so far in 2012-13, while Rooney has claimed just 13 - though ten of those have come in his past 13 games.

With Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck also offering striking alternatives, The Times reports that a £40 million bid may tempt Sir Alex Ferguson in to offloading Rooney, who is the club's highest earner with a wage believed to be £250,000 a week.

PSG will be looking to build on their already impressive squad this summer, with the club's wealthy Qatari owners reportedly enamoured with the prospect of pairing the United and England star up front with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Rooney, whose current United deal expires in 2015, is the latest on a long list of high-profile players linked with Les Parisiens - his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, Napoli star Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao of Atletico Madrid have also recently been tipped to be summer transfer targets.
