Ferguson expects to move into director role

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his intention to take an upstairs role at Manchester United when he eventually retires from managing the club.

The 71-year-old has become an integral part of the club since taking to the Old Trafford dugout in 1986, and in recent times has been honoured with both a stand at the ground being named after him and a statue of him erected outside the stadium.

The Scottish boss said in an interview with new magazine twentyfour7 Football that he wanted to remain involved with the club when he does decide to finally quit management.

"There's no getting rid of me," Ferguson said. "I will probably become a director."

Ferguson insisted that, although he has his eye on life after coaching, he has not made a decision on when to pursue a new direction, but insisted that it will be his decision when to call it a day.

"Nobody knows, neither do I," he said. "It won't be a doctor that tells me to quit!"

In the same interview, Ferguson also expressed his confidence that the club can continue its dominance of the Premier League era even after he steps down and added that, while he would be consulted as to who his successor should be, the final decision will not be his.

"They'll ask me," he said. "But I think it'll be a club decision not mine."
