Giggs signs latest one-year United extension

Ryan Giggs has agreed and signed a new contract extension at Manchester United that will keep him at the club for at least another season.

Giggs, 39, will complete his 23rd season at Old Trafford with the deal - after deciding to carry on playing after another campaign where he has contributed significantly to United's push for trophies on all fronts.

"I am feeling good, enjoying my football more than ever and, most importantly, I feel I am making a contribution to the team," Giggs said. "This is an exciting team to be part of, with great team spirit, and we are again pushing for trophies as we head towards the business end of the season.

"I am delighted to have signed a new contract. I would like to thank Sir Alex and the coaching staff and I would also like to thank David Gill who has been a tremendous support over my many years here."

Giggs has made 931 appearances for United, a record for any player at one club, and has scored in the last two league games, meaning he has struck in 23 consecutive campaigns.

He has won the Premier League 12 times as well as four FA Cups, three League Cups, two UEFA Champions Leagues, one Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a Club World Cup and, including his 64 caps for Wales and four games for Great Britain, has made 999 senior appearances.

The Welshman will be 40 at the conclusion of his new deal. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson declared himself "absolutely delighted" to award the midfielder another contract.

"What can I say about Ryan that hasn't already been said? He is a marvellous player and an exceptional human being," Ferguson said. "Ryan is an example to us all, the way in which he has, and continues to, look after himself.

"He has fantastic energy for the game and it is wonderful to see. Ryan seems to reach a new milestone every week and to think that he now has 23 unbroken years of league goals behind him is truly amazing in the modern-day game.

"His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever and I am absolutely delighted that he has signed a new contract."

Giggs will make his 1000th career professional appearance if he plays any part in United's home game against Norwich City on Saturday.
