Phil Jones appears to be facing a race against time to be fit for Manchester United's Champions League clash with Real Madrid after missing training on Monday.

Jones, 19, put in an impressive display in the first leg at the Bernabeu but has been out of action since injuring his ankle against Reading two weeks ago.

Despite his absence from training, the England international may still feature at Old Trafford on Tuesday, with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wanting to give him every chance of proving his fitness.

The same is true for centre-back Jonny Evans, who trained on his own at the start of Monday's session at United's Carrington complex.

With Jones and Evans missing, Ferguson drafted in two reserve-team players - former Charlton trainee Sean McGinty and midfielder Luke Hendrie - to train with the first-team squad.

Jose Mourinho and his Madrid side, who beat Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and Primera Division last week, arrived in Manchester on Sunday.
