Franck Ribery will miss Bayern Munich's Champions League last-16 second leg against Arsenal due to an ankle injury.

Bayern boast a 3-1 advantage heading into Wednesday's meeting at the Allianz Arena, after impressing in the first leg at Emirates Stadium to leave Arsenal staring at an exit.

But news of Ribery's absence through sprained ligaments in his left ankle will serve as a minor boost for the Gunners, while Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jerome Boateng are already out due to suspension.

"Franck has problems," Jupp Heynckes, whose side are top of the Bundesliga table by 20 points, told Kicker on Sunday, explaining he was "doubtful" for the midweek match.

Bayern released a statement on Monday confirming the France international, who has scored once in this season's Champions League, will be absent for the encounter.

The Champions League is Arsenal's only hope of silverware this season after exits in the FA Cup and League Cup to sides not plying their trade in the Premier League.

Manager Arsene Wenger, though, accepts his side must "make the impossible possible" if they are to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
