Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen is eager to undergo a shoulder operation that will keep him sidelined for three months so that he can be fully fit for the start of next season.

Allen, 22, faces an extended period out injured at some point with a recurrence of an old shoulder injury having deteriorated so much that further surgery is needed.

The Reds will decide when Allen has the surgery, but the former Swansea man is hoping to get the operation out of the way sooner rather than later.

"It is something that needs sorting out," Allen said. "I had an operation a few years ago and unfortunately it is a recurrence. It has slowly deteriorated to the point where an operation is the only thing that can solve it.''

Allen added: "I can play on, but it is all about the timing because I will be out for three months. Obviously, I don't want to miss the start of next season if I can but we will see what the club have planned because it is a reasonably long lay-off.''

Allen is set to be in Chris Coleman's Wales squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Scotland and Croatia when it is announced on Wednesday.

Wales have struggled under Coleman since he took over the reins last year, but the midfielder is encouraged by the side's future following the win against Austria last month.

"These things take time,'' Allen said. "It was a difficult period for everyone in Welsh football but recent performances and results show we are moving in the right direction. We have always had the talent and ability that's for sure. Now we are getting to the stage where we are benefiting from past experiences and we are ready to take it to the next level.''
