Ashley Young: Man United won't be denied silverware

Manchester United winger Ashley Young hopes his long wait for a major trophy is finally coming to an end.

Young turns 28 in the summer, has won 27 caps for England and has cost £26 million in transfer fees but so far the only medal he has won came from the Community Shield on his Manchester United debut in 2011.

But the former Watford and Aston Villa winger is determined to break his duck and, with United 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League and in a team he believes are "born winners", he is close to realising his ambition.

"I have come to the club to win trophies," Young said. "That is what I want to do. Hopefully we can kick on now until the end of the season and maintain the good form we have shown so far."

Young's current team-mates include the most decorated player in the history of English football, Ryan Giggs, and others with sizeable medal collections, like Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.

But he was denied silverware by United in his Villa days when Sir Alex Ferguson's team beat his former employers in the final of the League Cup in 2011.

And Young believes his team-mates have a winning mentality, adding: "When you move to a club like United you look at the trophy cabinet and what they have won. Everybody is a born winner. The manager gives you that belief to win every game and win trophies. I joined the club to win trophies."

United have gone two games without a victory, with the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid being followed by a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in the FA Cup.

And Young added: "We want to get back to winning ways. At a club like Manchester United, winning is a habit. You go into every game wanting to win.

"There is a disappointment when you don't. There is disappointment when you don't win in training. If you have that winning mentality in training, you take that onto the pitch in weekend games."

If United are to do a domestic Double and win the FA Cup, they will have to beat Chelsea in a replay at Stamford Bridge and Manchester City at Wembley just to reach the final.

Young said: "There is not a lot the players can do about the semi-finals being at Wembley. It is one of those things. As long as we get through, that is all that matters."
