Tevez charged with new motoring offence

Cheshire Police has announced that Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez has been charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

If found guilty, Tevez faces a potential prison sentence of up to six months. Alternative punishments include community service, an anti-social behaviour order or a fine of up to £5,000.

A police statement read: "Cheshire Constabulary has charged a 29-year-old man from Alderley Edge with offences of driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

"The man was arrested on the A538 in Macclesfield at 5.13pm on Thursday, March 7, and later released on police bail. He answered bail today at Middlewich Custody Suite and was formally charged.

"He will appear at Macclesfield Magistrates' Court on April 3."

Tevez, 29, was banned from driving for six months in January after pleading guilty to two counts of failing to provide information related to incidents in which his car was found to have been speeding.

In addition to being suspended, Tevez was fined £1,540. The Argentine's solicitor, Gwyn Lewis, said he had failed to understand the word "constabulary" on official letters from the police.

The Manchester Evening News reports that Mr Lewis, who works for the Burton-Copeland firm, is likely to represent Tevez in the upcoming case. He has previously defended several City players and specialises in motoring cases.
