Former Newcastle striker Nile Ranger has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Ranger, 21, who left the Magpies by mutual consent at the beginning of the month, was detained after a fight broke out at the Gate entertainment complex in the city centre.

A Northumbria police spokesperson said: "At 7.09pm yesterday, police received a report of a fight in the car park area at the Gate, Newcastle.

"A 21-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault and he is currently in custody helping police with inquiries."

Ranger remains without a club after leaving St James' Park, and was recently linked with a move to nearby Workington Reds in the Conference North.

However, Reds boss Darren Edmondson said he would not be pursuing a deal because of the player's lack of interest in making the move.

"I tracked down Nile's number, made a few calls and sent him a text message," he told the News and Star.

"He didn't get back to me, so that's the end of it. I wanted to sound him out about a possible move, but he obviously wasn't interested."
