Southampton slapped with £20k fine

The Football Association has fined Southampton £20,000 after the club admitted a charge of failing to control their players during last weekend's draw with Norwich City.

Southampton reacted angrily at Carrow Road after referee Mark Clattenburg awarded a late penalty for a Luke Shaw challenge on Grant Holt.

Holt failed to convert the penalty, and the match finished goalless, but Southampton players, along with manager Mauricio Pochettino, protested vehemently at the end of the match.

The club was charged on Tuesday, and an FA statement on Friday read: "The FA has today fined Southampton £20,000 after they admitted a charge of failing to control their players.

"The incident occurred following the awarding of a penalty to Norwich during the match at Carrow Road on Saturday 9 March."

Pochettino, speaking before the charge was accepted, had defended his actions.

He said: "I don't really feel bad about it because I had full respect for the referee. I went to speak with him and perhaps I should have waited until he came to the dugout to speak to him, but I was always on speaking terms.

"That is the kind of person I am - a spontaneous person. I could be at fault a little bit for actually entering the field, but I must say I was on speaking terms with the referee.

"He spoke back to me and there was never anything above that. Perhaps I should have waited for him to come back to the dugout but I was defending the interests of my club and he was defending his job as well."
