Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady is out of Giovanni Trapattoni's squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Austria.

McGeady has failed to recover from the knee injury that sidelined him for Spartak Moscow. He was named in the provisional 29-man squad but has not made the revised 23-strong party.

As well as McGeady, Norwich winger Anthony Pilkington (hamstring) and Hull defender Paul McShane (knee) are out, the Football Association of Ireland said.

The Republic face Sweden in Stockholm on Friday and play Austria in Dublin on the following Tuesday.

Trapattoni has cut West Ham defender Joey O'Brien, Reading centre-back Alex Pearce and Wolves' Stephen Ward and Kevin Doyle, all of whom are now on standby duty. Millwall striker Andy Keogh gets a call-up.

Ipswich goalkeeper Stephen Henderson and Hull midfielder David Meyler will also be on standby.

"As a manager, I am sometimes faced with some very tough decisions, but I feel that the squad I have chosen will get us the results we need from these two qualifiers," Trapattoni said.

"I have not made these choices lightly and will continue to monitor each player's progress ahead of our next challenges in May and June.''

Squad in full:

Forde (Millwall), Westwood (Sunderland), Randolph (Motherwell); O'Shea (Sunderland) St Ledger (Leicester), Clark (Aston Villa), Wilson (Stoke), Coleman (Everton), Kelly (Reading), O'Dea (Toronto); Whelan (Stoke), McCarthy (Wigan), Green (Leeds), Hoolahan (Norwich), Hendrick (Derby), McClean (Sunderland), Brady (Hull); Keogh (Millwall), Keane (LA Galaxy), Long (West Brom), Sammon (Derby), Walters (Stoke), Cox (Nottingham Forest).
