Redknapp: Away form must improve
Harry Redknapp admits that home victories alone won't be enough to save his Queens Park Rangers side from relegation.
The crushing disappointment of a 3-2 defeat in Saturday's six-pointer at Aston Villa left Rangers seven points beneath the safety line with eight matches left.
It also had their boss admitting they would need to rely on more than just their improved home form to extend their Premier League stay into a third season.
But Redknapp is content that his squad at least now have the firepower to mount a challenge to pull off another dramatic last-day escape.
"We're starting to score some goals...we weren't a team who could," Redknapp said. "Our top scorer has four, which is a problem. But we have to win away. We have to win at Fulham or Reading and win our home games. If we do that, we can still stay up."
And Redknapp thinks his team's display, especially in a dominant first half in which he believes they should have been four goals up, was not only worthy of reward but also an encouraging pointer towards another possible salvage act on his CV.
"It was always going to be hard [staying up] but we're playing well," he said. "In the first half, I couldn't have asked for more and, all through the game, we had chances. This is probably tougher than it was at Portsmouth but we're playing well. That's the key.
"We need to play as we are but cut out the mistakes. From before the Southampton away game, we have taken six points but this is disappointing because we needed to stop Villa winning. At 2-2, we would have been quite happy in the end, with a home game having gone for them.
"It's going to be hard but not impossible. I'm not giving up. We have been lower than this before and bounced back. We got beaten by Liverpool and went and won at Chelsea in the week."
Rangers' task was made even more difficult with 18th-placed Wigan's home victory over Newcastle on Sunday. QPR now trail the Latics by four points, although the fact they still have to face them at Loftus Road gives them the chance to eat into the deficit.
