Northern Ireland's home World Cup qualifier against Russia has been postponed from Friday evening until 3pm on Saturday amid freezing conditions and heavy snowfall.

Belfast has been hit hard by another wave of bitterly cold weather, and the match officials believed the threat of further heavy snow meant there was little chance that the evening match could be played.

Volunteers and groundstaff had spent much of Friday sweeping snow from the pitch, while council workers had been gritting roads and pavements around the stadium.

A short statement on the official Football Association of Ireland website said: "The FIFA World Cup qualifier against Russia has been postponed by the match officials.

"After agreement between both associations, the game will be rescheduled for 3pm, 23rd March."
