Paris Saint-Germain have put Manchester United on alert by confirming their interest in Wayne Rooney.

PSG, with huge financial wealth at their disposal, have made it clear that they want to become one of the big players in European football.

They are still in with a chance of Champions League glory this term, but president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has insisted he has a long-term vision at the club. With that in mind, money is likely to be made available to mananger Carlo Ancelotti in the summer and there would be no objection from on high should a bid be made for Rooney.

"He is a great player, one of the best strikers in the world," Al-Khelaifi told Sky Sports News. "I think everybody would like it to happen.

"But if you want to talk about the facts we have not approached him."

Rooney's future at Old Trafford is far from clear, despite manager Sir Alex Ferguson insisting the forward would not be sold in the summer.

Speculation intensified when Ferguson omitted Rooney for the second leg of their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, but later said the decision was purely tactical and that he had no desire to sell the England international.
